Game #1 @Houston
Houston got off to a good start behind Hakeem Olajuwon who made all 5 of his shots in the 1st quarter. New York came back behind Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley who had 12 and 10 points respectively in the 1st half. The Knicks couldn’t catch all the way up, in part, because Houston’s defense forced them into 7 2nd quarter turnovers. They did cut the lead to 54-52 in the 3rd but then missed their next 6 field goal attempts. In fact, they missed 15 of their last 17 shots in the 3rd quarter as the Rockets built an 11-point lead. The lead was 12 in the 4th quarter before New York staged a rally. Stifling defense by both teams led to a Finals record of only 28 points combined being scored in the 4th. The Rockets went almost 8 minutes without a field goal in the 4th as N.Y. cut the lead. The Knicks used a 13-4 run to cut the lead to 3 with 2:15 remaining before Houston finally scored as Otis Thorpe jammed one home. The Knicks were down 82-78 with 0:27 on the clock when Ewing missed a 3-pointer that would have cut the lead to 1.

Game #2 @Houston
This would be the only time in the series that a team would shoot 50% from the field. Knicks’ coach Pat Riley switched his defense and Anthony Mason guarded Hakeem Olajuwon while Patrick Ewing guarded Otis Thorpe. Houston set a Finals record with 22 3-point attempts in a game. Unfortunately for the Rockets, they connected on only 6 of those tries while N.Y. made 7 of 11 treys. After the Knicks led by 7 entering the final period, Houston went on a 14-4 run to take a 79-76 lead with 6:32 to play when Vernon Maxwell drained a 3-pointer. Houston would not make a field goal for the rest of the game and, this time, they could not hold off the Knicks during their dry spell. N.Y. would outscore Houston 15-4 in the final 6 minutes. Derek Harper’s 3-pointer gave N.Y. the lead for good, 82-79, with 4:29 left. Harper then hit another 3-ball with 2 minutes to play that made the score 87-81 in favor of N.Y.

Game #4 @New York
N.Y. came out strong in this game as they started the game on a 17-2 tear. Houston would make only 33% of its shots in the opening frame and commit 8 turnovers. The Knicks led 32-19 with only 4:47 left in the 1st half. Neither team attempted a free throw in the 2nd quarter. Houston went on a 14-1 run in the 3rd with Hakeem Olajuwon scoring 8 of the 14 points in the run. Olajuwon would score 22 points in the 2nd half of the game. The run left Houston ahead 56-50, but N.Y. immediately responded with a 10-2 run of their own and went in front 60-58. Matt Bullard answered with a trifecta at the end of the 3rd period. Houston had shot 55% in the 3rd quarter to storm back. In the 4th quarter, John Starks took over as he outscored his counterpart, Vernon Maxwell, 11-0 in the quarter. The score was tied at 72 when N.Y. took control of the game with a 10-3 run. Charles Oakley pulled down 8 rebounds in the final period as N.Y. outrebounded Houston 18-7 in the 4th. The finisher was when Patrick Ewing missed a free throw but Oakley outfought 3 Rockets for the board. Oakley then found Starks who knocked down a trey to push the margin back to 6 points.

Game #5 @New York
There were 6 lead changes and 3 ties in the 2nd half alone as both teams fought back and forth. The Knicks squandered a 12-point 3rd quarter lead as Hakeem Olajuwon made 8 free throws in the 2nd half to pull Houston ahead 79-76 with 4:26 left to play. After a Vernon Maxwell free throw, Houston regained possession with an 80-78 lead, but Kenny Smith stepped on the baseline. N.Y. struck back and John Starks’ 3-pointer pushed them ahead 81-80 with 2:22 left. Patrick Ewing then blocked a Carl Herrera shot that would’ve given Houston the lead back. The Knicks would make 10 straight free throws in the final 2 minutes to seal the deal and close the game on a 15-5 run. Houston would miss 12 of 13 shots (including 10 straight) down the stretch, as they couldn’t escape the Knick D. Olajuwon bounced back from a horrendous 1st half in which he committed 6 turnovers. Of course, it was during this game that the infamous O.J. Simpson Bronco “chase” interrupted the TV broadcast.

Game #6 @Houston
The Knicks looked like they were going to break out in the 1st quarter as they took a 15-8 lead over Houston. Houston rallied to within 19-13 late in the 1st despite committing 7 turnovers and having 4 shots blocked by Patrick Ewing. Carl Herrera emerged an unlikely 2nd quarter hero as he was 5-5 from the field and had 5 rebounds. Houston went on a 9-0 run to take a 35-27 lead as they made 56% of their shots in the quarter. N.Y. would make only 3% of its shots in the quarter. Patrick Ewing came up with 9 points and 6 rebounds in the 3rd quarter as N.Y. rallied after Houston had taken a 12-point lead. The Knicks cut into the lead with a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 4. John Starks led a furious 4th quarter rally with 17 points in the 4th. A Charles Oakley 3-point play cut the lead to3 points and Hakeem Olajuwon had 5 personal fouls. Olajuwon would play the final 6:10 with those 5 fouls. Houston pulled back out to an 84-77 lead with 3:17 left. Starks hit another 3 to cut the lead to 84-82 at the 1:17 mark. N.Y. got the ball back without Houston scoring but Olajuwon came up with a big steal and drew a foul on the offensive end. Olajuwon converted both free throws to make it 86-82 with 40 seconds to play. The Knicks closed back within 2 at 86-84 and then got the ball back. N.Y. went for the hot hand and the win but Olajuwon blocked a Starks 3-point attempt with 2 seconds left. Houston evened the series despite not making a field goal in the final 3:17.

Game #7 @Houston
Both big men were stymied in the 1st quarter; Olajuwon couldn’t make a shot while Ewing couldn’t get a shot. Olajuwon was 3-10 in the 1st while Ewing was 1-2. N.Y. briefly took the lead in the 2nd quarter but that would be their only lead of the game. An 8-2 N.Y. run closed them to within 40-39 but Houston would not let them retake the lead. The Rockets would shoot 56% in the 2nd to maintain the lead. Ewing would come alive in the 3rd as he scored 8 of N.Y.’s 17 points in the period. They again closed to within 1 late in the 3rd but a Carl Herrera hook shot put Houston back up by 3 entering the final frame. Sam Cassell was again clutch as he scored the first 6 points of the 4th period for Houston and N.Y. missed 9 of 10 shots to fall further behind again. The Knicks cut the lead from 7 to 3 with 2:51 left in the game. Houston would come up with an Olajuwon turnaround and a Vernon Maxwell 3-pointer to go back up by 8 points and clinch the franchise’s history. In the fateful 4th quarter, Game 6 hero John Starks made only 1 of 10 shots and missed all 5 3-point tries.
