Game #2 @Los Angeles
The Lakers were off and running again, but this time Boston stayed close early. Robert Parish’s 12 points in the opening frame kept the Celtics close. In the 2nd quarter, The Lakers exploded on a 20 point run in which Michael Cooper accounted for all 20 points via either basket or assist. Cooper tied a Finals record with 8 assists in the 2nd quarter while making 6 of 7 3-point attempts. L.A. was leading 49-42 when they scored 7 points in 50 seconds to go up 56-42. All in all, the Lakers outscored the Celtics 36-2 on fastbreak points in the 1st half. Trailing by 19 at the half, Boston tried to rally in the 3rd as Larry Bird (9), Dennis Johnson (12) and Kevin McHale (10) scored 31 of their 36 3rd quarter points. Boston did cut the lead from 22 points to 15 but it was all for naught as L.A. opened the 4th with an 8-0 run to take a 115-92 lead. Not too long after that, it was bench-clearing time. Magic tied the same record as Cooper when he came up with 8 3rd quarter assists. Things got even worse for Boston as Kevin McHale reinjured his foot. The Lakers shot a Finals record 61.5% from the field for the game.

Game #3 @Boston
Back home in Boston Garden, the Celtics turned things around but not without a scare. L.A. jumped out to a 9-point lead in the 1st quarter and threatened to blow out the game and take a 3-0 lead. After shooting 32% in the 1st, Boston caught fire in the 2nd quarter as they made 17 of 21 field goal attempts. Mychal Thompson scored 6 straight points to give the Lakers a 39-30 lead, but they could not sustain the momentum. A 22-foot jumper from Dennis Johnson gave Boston the lead for good at 48-47 with 2:43 left in the half. Boston scored on 19 of 23 possession as they were lead by DJ’s 12 and Larry Bird’s 14 points n the quarter. The Celtics also had an unlikely 2nd quarter hero; Greg Kite. With Robert Parish in foul trouble, Kite came in and Boston outscored L.A. 30-17 over the rest of the quarter. Boston opened the 3rd with a 14-4 run to take a 14-point lead. L.A. would cut it to 7 on a Michael Cooper trey, but Boston pushed it back to 14. L.A. continued to fight back and cut it to 106-101 late on a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar skyhook with 2:25 to play. Kevin McHale scored off an offensive rebound to make it 108-101 to seal the game. Boston had 5 offensive rebound buckets in the 4th period.

Game #4 @Boston
Both teams opened the game unable to find the mark as Boston missed its first 6 attempts. The Lakers couldn’t take advantage because they made only 4 of their first 15 shots. Danny Ainge was the one player who did find the range with 11 of Boston’s 29 points. Boston’s 33-30 lead was their smallest of the quarter. Larry Bird scored 9 points in the first 4 ½ minutes of the 3rd as Boston went up 70-55. Byron Scott and Kevin McHale received technical fouls after they tussled with one another. Boston sill led 103-95 with less than 4 minutes remaining when L.A came back. A 9-0 Laker run was fueled by defense, which forced turnovers by Bird, Dennis Johnson and Robert Parish. They took the lead on a Magic-to-Kareem alley oop with 30 seconds to play. Bird nailed a trey to give the Celtics a 106-104 lead with 12 seconds to play. Kareem drew a foul and made the first to cut the lead to 106-105. He missed the 2nd and Mychal Thompson and McHale fought over the loose ball. The ball went out of bounds off McHale. Magic took the ball on the wing and drove the middle where he hit what he called his “junior, junior sky hook” over Bird, Parish and McHale to make it 107-106 L.A. with 2 ticks left. Bird somehow got open on the baseline but his jumper was off and L.A. led 3-1.

Game #5 @Boston
L.A. tried to break the Celts early but Boston refused to go down on the parquet floor. After a back and forth opening quarter, L.A. started the 2nd with a 9-1 run to take a 34-26 lead. Boston would outscore L.A. 37-14 the rest of the half. It started with a 15-4 run that gave them a 41-38 lead with 7:44 left in the 2nd. They, then, closed the half on a 12-2 run to take a 15-point lead into the locker room. James Worthy, who had been so deadly in the series, was only 1-9 from the field in the 1st half. Danny Ainge made sure L.A. would not comeback by making 4 3-pointers in the 3rd quarter as he scored 14 in the frame. In the 4th period, the Laker reserve duo of Mychal Thompson and Michael Cooper lead a comeback. An Abdul-Jabbar skyhook made it 103-95 with 6:00 left. Boston responded with a 13-4 run (DJ with 8 of the 13) to make it 116-99 with 3 minutes left.

Game #6 @Los Angeles
For a long while, it looked like Boston would force a dreaded 7th game. Dennis Johnson held Magic to 4 1st half points and stifled the Laker offense. After a 10-4 Laker start, the Celtics answered with a 15-2 run to take the lead. The Celtics would maintain and lead for all 12 minutes of the 2nd quarter. The Lakers fired out of the gates in the 3rd quarter, scoring the first 10 points of the quarter. That turned a 5 point deficit into a 5 point lead before Boston scored its first points nearly 3 minutes into the period. That bucket was followed by another 8-0 Laker run that gave L.A. a 69-58 lead. Boston connected on only 26% of its 3rd quarter shot attempts. Robert Parish picked up his 5th foul in the 4th as L.A. extended its lead to 89-70. Parish would later foul out with 7:22 left in the game, as Boston never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
