Game #1 @Chicago
Michael Jordan came out smoking in his 1st NBA Finals appearance as he had 15 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists in the 1st quarter. The Lakers dominated inside as their frontcourt outscored Chicago’s 60-31. L.A. continued to hang in there despite Magic Johnson not attempting a field goal in the 2nd quarter. In fact, he would not have any in the 3rd period until he hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Lakers their largest lead, 75-68. Magic would record his 29th career playoff triple-double. Jordan led Chicago back with 13 points in the 4th quarter. Scottie Pippen gave the Bulls a 91-89 lead with 2 free throws with 1:02 left in the game. Both teams ran the shot clock down but came up empty. L.A. worked the ball and Sam Perkins nailed an open 3-pointer with 0:14 left to give L.A. a 92-91 lead. Jordan then missed a 17-footer and L.A. came up with the ball. Byron Scott made the 1st free throw but missed the 2nd. The Bulls were out of timeouts and could only manage a 50-foot heave by Pippen that was well off the mark. The Lakers attempted an all-time Finals low 66 field goals.

Game #2 @Chicago
Bulls’ coach Phil Jackson switched this game and had Scottie Pippen guard Magic Johnson while Michael Jordan took Vlade Divac. Pippen held Magic’s inside game in check and was quicker than him as well. Horace Grant led the way in the 1st half with 14 points. Jordan scored only 2 points in the game’s first 20 minutes. Thereafter though, he would make his next 13 shots from the floor. Chicago was leading 58-51 when Byron Scott was called for a breakaway foul on Pippen with 8:05 left in the period. That seemed to wake Chicago as they went on to make 17 of 20 field goals in the 3rd. For the game, the Bulls shot a Finals record 61.7% from the floor. Even Jordan leaving with 4 fouls with 4:11 left in the 3rd did not stop them. Chicago led by 12 when he left and they increased their lead to 16 by the time he returned. Jordan then sparked an 11-0 run that put the Bulls up 97-71. He scored 7 of the 11 points and assisted on the other 2 hoops.

Game #3 @Los Angeles
The Bulls turned the tables on L.A. in this game and dominated the paint. L.A. set a Finals rebounding low. The Lakers broke loose for an 18-2 run that brought them from 3 down (49-52) to 13 up (67-54). Chicago would answer with the run with a 20-7 run to tie the game in the 4th quarter at 74. Chicago looked to have taken control when Horace Grant’s layup gave them a 90-87 lead with 1:07 to play. Sam Perkins scored on a drive to cut the lead to 1 with 0:39 left. After the Bulls failed to score, Vlade Divac scored on a layup while drawing a foul. After he converted the free throw, the Lakers led 92-90 with 10.9 seconds left. Michael Jordan then drove the length of the floor and hit a 14-foot shot to tie the game with 3.7 seconds left. The Lakers couldn’t score and the game into overtime. Jordan would score 6 of the Bulls 12 points as they pulled away in the extra session.

Game #4 @Los Angeles
The Lakers led 28-27 after the 1st quarter; it was only the 2nd time in the 1991 playoffs that Chicago trailed after the 1st quarter. Chicago came right out with a 19-9 run to start the 2nd period and take a 46-37 lead. Michael Jordan led the way with 11 points in the 2nd quarter. The Lakers’ shooting touch deserted them as they made only a combined 12 of 41 shots in the 2nd & 3rd quarters. They were further hampered when both James Worthy and Byron Scott both left the game with injuries. Worthy left with a sprained ankle while Scott injured his shoulder. Chicago built a 74-58 lead at the end of the 3rd. L.A. closed to 78-71 in the 4th but would get no closer. The Bulls then used a 19-8 run to seal the game with Jordan and Pippen each scoring 6 in the run. The Bulls committed a Finals low 5 turnovers in the game.

Game #5 @Los Angeles
Neither James Worthy nor Byron Scott could comeback from their injuries to play in Game 5. Elden Campbell tried to pick up the slack by scoring 13 points in the 1st half as he outscored Michael Jordan who had 12. Tony Smith played well after being forced into more playing time. But, in the end, not even Magic Johnson’s 20 assists nor his 30th career playoff triple-double could save L.A. The Lakers fought gamely though. In fact, they led 93-90 with 6:47 left in the game. Then Chicago unleashed a 9-0 run to take the lead by 6. They had a Scottie Pippen 3, John Paxson from 22 feet twice, and a Paxson fast break layup during the run. Paxson would score 10 points in the final 3:54 of the game. It was 105-101 with 56 seconds left but L.A. could not score again. Three free throws by Jordan and Pippen sealed Chicago’s 1st title.
