Game #4 4/9/59 @Minneapolis
The Celtics completed the 1st Finals sweep as they held off the Lakers. Boston led 47-41 in the 2nd period before Minneapolis took the lead at 56-53 with 3:00 left. Boston, powered by Tom Heinsohn’s 8 points, closed the half on an 11-6 run. Boston maintained a lead of 2 to 8 points throughout the 3rd period. Bill Sharman missed a free throw in 3rd quarter ended a streak of 56 in a row. Elgin Baylor put Minneapolis up 95-93 in the 4th period. A Bob Leonard hoop answered a 3-point play by Frank Ramsey that made it 97-96 Lakers. Bill Sharman though would put Boston ahead to stay with 2 hoops in less than 30 seconds. A Ramsey lay-up with 30 seconds to play clinched the game.
Bill Russell set a Finals record by grabbing 30 or more rebounds in his 3rd straight game. He grabbed 20+ rebounds in all 4 games of the series with 118 for the series (the high for a 4-game series). Boston also won its 22nd straight game vs. the Lakers in the series clincher. Russell & Bob Cousy set the standard by playing 186 minutes in the 4-game series. Elgin Baylor’s 102 field goal attempts are still the 4-game standard as well. Other marks were Boston’s 487 points & 188 field goals made in the series & the Lakers’ frigid 38.8 field goal shooting for the series. Boston’s 111-159 from the line are both highs as well. The Lakers 464 FGA & Boston’s 463 are 1-2 in 4-games series totals.
