Game #1 @Boston
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had headaches before the game then he went out and gave Boston headaches during the game. After overcoming a pre-game migraine, Kareem scored 13 points in the 1st quarter and 10 more in the 2nd. The Lakers raced to a 28-10 lead before Kevin McHale scored 8 points in the last 2:58 of the quarter to close the gap. L.A. went up by 18 again in the 2nd quarter when they led 48-30. In the 3rd quarter, L.A. led 83-64 before Boston made a comeback. Magic Johnson and Abdul-Jabbar both picked up their 4th personal fouls which led to a 24-9 Boston run. A Larry Bird 3-pointer at the 3rd quarter buzzer cut the lead to 92-88. Boston, however, would get no closer as L.A. answered every Boston challenge.

Game #2 @Boston
Boston came out strong in the 1st period and only Magic’s 14 points kept L.A. from being run out of Boston Garden. L.A. rallied in the 2nd quarter behind James Worthy and Jamaal Wilkes to close the gap to 2 at the half with a 15-4 run after Boston led 57-44. Worthy would finish the game with 5 3-point plays as Boston could not contain his quickness. Kareem scored 9 points in the first 3:34 of the 3rd quarter as L.A. took their first lead of the game, 66-65. Boston would answer with a run of 11-3 to lead 76-69. The Lakers would answer with their own run of 18-6 to lead 87-82 late in the 3rd. Boston would score the last 8 points (4 by Danny Ainge) of the 3rd to re-take the lead. In the 4th, L.A. took a 115-113 lead with 18 seconds left. McHale was fouled and had 2 shots. L.A. coach Pat Riley told Magic that he wanted a timeout if McHale made the 2nd shot but Magic misunderstood. After McHale missed both, L.A. called timeout and allowed the Celtics to set up their defense. Magic got the ball to Worthy in the backcourt, but with Magic standing just an arms’ length away, Worthy tried to hit Byron Scott with a crosscourt pass. Celtic Gerald Henderson picked off pass streaking towards the hoop and laid in the tying basket with 13 seconds left. L.A. would get no last shot attempt as Magic was caught dribbling on the perimeter as the horn sounded. In the OT, Scott Wedman took a feed from Henderson and hit a baseline jumper to make it 122-121 Boston with 14 ticks on the clock. Larry Bird hit 2 free throws with 2 seconds left to provide the final margin.

Game #4 @Los Angeles
The Lakers missed yet another chance to throw dirt on the Celtics as they squandered several late chances to take a 3-1 lead in the series. L.A. led by as many as 14 points in the 1st half and looked to be in charge. L.A. made 10 of their first 11 shots as they took a 31-21 lead late in the 1st period. Boston closed the period on an 11-1 run to offset the Lakers’ early streak. However, the Celtics started the 2nd period by missing their first 9 shots as L.A. went on a 14-1 run behind 6 points from Swen Nater to take a 47-33 lead. Boston suffered a setback when bench sharpshooter Scott Wedman fractured his fibula. L.A. was still leading 76-70 in the 3rd quarter when the psychological turning point of the series occurred. Kevin McHale clotheslined Kurt Rambis on a breakaway and a near pier 6 brawl erupted. Just 1:29 later Kareem and Bird had to be separated by officials as well. Boston would go on to take a 104-101 with 5:24 left in the game but L.A. answered with an 8-0 run to take a 109-104 lead. L.A. still led by 5 (113-108) with less than a minute remaining. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar then fouled out as Robert Parish scored. Kareem was a big loss as he had been on a roll with 14 4th quarter points. Parish hit the free throw to cut it to 113-111. Parish then knocked the ball away from Magic and Larry Bird converted 2 free throws to tie the game at 113. Parish came up with another steal with 4 seconds left but both Bird & McHale missed opportunities to win the game in regulation. L.A. would be haunted by 4 missed free throws in the final minute. Magic Johnson missed 2 with 35 seconds left and James Worthy missed 2 with 10 seconds left after being given the “choke” sign by Cedric Maxwell and M.L. Carr. In the extra period, Bird hit a 15-foot turnaround to give Boston a 125-123 lead with 16 seconds left in OT. L.A. could not answer as they could not find Worthy who had 10 points in the OT. Dennis Johnson converted 2 free throws to clinch the game.

Game #5 @Boston
Boston continued to be hot- literally and figuratively. In a sweltering Boston Garden on a sweltering June Sunday afternoon, the Celtics ran by the Lakers to take a 3-2 series lead. It was 97 degrees in the Garden and Larry Bird was even hotter. Bird had 8 points and 9 rebounds in the 1st quarter. L.A. took an early 12-6 lead but couldn’t stop Bird or Dennis Johnson. L.A. couldn’t even take advantage of Kevin McHale picking up his 4th foul with 8:24 left in the 2nd period with Boston leading 38-30. Kareem would make only 4 of 16 shots in the 1st half as L.A. steadily fell behind. Boston started the 2nd half with a 13-3 run (8 of the 13 points from Cedric Maxwell) to seize a 68-56 lead. L.A. would answer behind Bob McAdoo to close the gap to 68-65 with 6:42 left in the 3rd stanza. Boston pushed the lead to 11 on a Bird buzzer beating 3-pointer. McAdoo again tried to rally L.A. with 2 hoops to cut Boston’s lead to 93-86. Boston then slammed the door as L.A. wilted in the heat. A 21-7 Celtic run made it 114-93 with 4 minutes remaining. Official Hugh Evans had to leave at halftime due to the heat with dehydration.

Once again Kareem Abdul-Jabbar suffered a pre-game migraine and once again he gave the Celtics a headache of their own. L.A.’s 4th game hero, Bob McAdoo had to leave with an injured Achilles tendon. Both teams came out on fire and the score was tied at 20 with still 5:37 left in the 1st as there had already been 10 lead changes and 4 ties. Magic scored 11 points in the 1st but Boston had the lead. Boston pushed the lead to 46-39 in the 2nd before Magic, Kareem and Michael Cooper fueled a 16-8 Laker run. After L.A. took a 55-54 lead, the Celtics answered and led by 6 after scoring the half’s last 7 points. Kareem scored 6 points in the first 39 seconds of the 3rd period but Boston maintained the lead and led 71-69. Dennis Johnson and Gerald Henderson then fueled a 13-4 run that left Boston ahead 84-73 with 4:58 left in the 3rd. The Lakers then shackled Boston to only 1 made field goal in the next 9 minutes. The resulting 18-3 Laker run left them ahead by 4 points. There was another near riot when James Worthy shoved Cedric Maxwell into the basket support. L.A. was leading 96-94 when Kareem scored 5 straight points to make it 101-94. A Michael Cooper alley-oop dunk made it 109-97 with 2:24 left and sent the series to a decisive game 7.

Game #7 @Boston
Boston was pulling out all the stops as M.L. Carr came out wearing his own set of goggles and Cedric Maxwell told his teammates in the lockerroom, “Get on my back fellas and I’ll take us home.” Cornbread would make good on his word as he made 11 of 13 free throws in the 1st half as he relentlessly drove to the hoop. Boston’s largest 1st half lead was at 47-38 in the 2nd period after a 3-point play by Maxwell. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored 12 points in the 1st period to help the Laker cause. L.A. hurt itself by missing 4 of 8 free throws late in the 2nd quarter. Gerald Henderson scored 9 points in the first 4:43 of the 3rd quarter. L.A. rallied to take a 72-71 lead before Larry Bird answered with 2 hoops to make it 75-72 with 5:17 left in the 3rd. Abdul-Jabbar missed 2 free throws and Robert Parish converted a 3-point play to give Boston A 78-72 lead. Boston was leading by 8 (105-97) with less than 2 minutes left when L.A. made its last run. A 3-point play by Kareem and a hoop by James Worthy made it 105-102 with 1:15 left. The Lakers got the ball back but Dennis Johnson came up with a big steal and then knocked down 2 free throws to make it 107-102 with 45 seconds left. Magic then spotted Worthy open under the hoop but Maxwell knocked the ball away and L.A. was forced to foul. Bird made both shots to make it 109-102 and the leprechauns began to smile.
