Game #1 @Boston
Boston started the game on a 10-4 run but Houston would stay in it behind 10 1st quarter point from Robert Reid. Ralph Sampson had a nightmarish 1st half with 3 personal fouls and 1-10 shooting. He picked up his 3rd foul with 7:15 left in the 1st quarter. Kevin McHale poured in 12 points in the 1st quarter while Robert Parish added 12 in the 2nd quarter. Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge combined for only 7 points in the 1st half, but 30 in the 2nd half. Boston led 38-28 early in the 2nd but the Rockets closed the gap by halftime behind Hakeem Olajuwon’s 25 points in the 1st half. Disaster would strike Houston in 3rd period as Olajuwon picked up his 4th and 5th fouls in a 33 second span. Johnson and Ainge combined for 22 3rd quarter points as Boston outscored Houston 27-11 in the last 9:18 of the period. Houston would never threaten during a sloppy 4th quarter.

Game #2 @Boston
The Celtics won their 40th consecutive game at Boston Garden as they buried the Rockets. Hakeem Olajuwon did not get his first shot attempt until more than 6 minutes had gone by in the 1st quarter. Houston coach was upset that Larry Bird did not get whistled for a single foul during 44 minutes despite Bird’s constantly doubling down on Olajuwon. Ralph Sampson started out hot in this game with 10 points in the opening frame. The Celtics nailed 5 of their first 6 shots to take an 11-4 lead. Sampson would score only 8 points after the 1st quarter and had to get stitches under his eye during the 2nd quarter. Bird helped the Celtics build a lead with 13 points in the 2nd quarter as Houston went without a field goal for the first 3 ½ minutes of the quarter. Boston was leading 64-56 early in the 3rd quarter when they broke the game open with an 11-1 run that made it 75-57. The Celtics would go on to lead by as many as 27 points in the 4th.

Game #3 @Houston
Houston started out hot led by Rodney McCray’s 10 1st quarter points as they built a lead. The Rockets largest lead was 48-39 in the 2nd quarter. The Rockets still lead at the half before Celtics opened the 3rd with a 17-3 run to give them a 76-65 lead with 5:44 left in the period. Kevin McHale led the charge with 11 points in the 3rd. Late in the 3rd, Bill Fitch switched Robert Reid to guard Larry Bird and, shades of the 1981 Finals, Bird struggled. He would make only 3 of 12 shots the rest of the way, including only 2 points in the decisive 4th period. Houston closed the 3rd period with a 15-8 streak to cut the lead to 4 points. However, Boston was still leading 102-94 late in the 4th. Houston fought back, starting with an Olajuwon 3-point play to cut the lead to 5. After a defensive stop, a Ralph Sampson hook cut it to 102-99. Mitchell Wiggins then cut it to a single point with a lay-up. When Olajuwon hit 2 free throws with 1:07, the Rockets led 103-102. Danny Ainge answered with a jumper to give Boston the lead 104-103 with 0:45 left. Wiggins tipped in a Rocket miss to make it 105-104 with 31 seconds left. Boston could not get a good shot and Robert Parish stepped on the sideline. The Celtics managed only 2 points in the final 3 minutes.

Game #4 @Houston
Houston jumped out to a 10-5 lead but Boston battled back to tie the game at 30 behind Kevin McHale’s 13 points. Houston used defense and rebounds to stay with Boston despite some sizzling Celtic shooting. Boston made 13 of 16 shots in the 2nd but Houston got off 31 shots and made 14. Houston had 12 offensive rebounds and forced 9 Boston turnovers in the half. Ralph Sampson scored 8 points in less than 2 minutes including back to back 3 point plays that made it 50-45 Rockets. Sampson would finish the half with 21 points. Boston would start to move in the 3rd and would have their largest lead, 82-74, late in the 3rd. Neither team would lead by more than 3 points in the 4th. Overall, there were 19 lead changes and 13 ties in the game. The score was knotted at 101 nearing the 2 minute mark. Larry Bird, who had scored only 2 points in the 4th, knocked down a trifecta to give Boston a 104-101. A Rodney McCray follow shot made it 104-103; it was Houston’s only points in the final 4 minutes. Then Bill Walton jammed home an offensive rebound for the game’s final points. McHale and Ainge preserved the lead due to key steals in the final minute.

Game #5 @Houston
The Rockets staved off elimination in a game marred by a 2nd quarter brawl. With Houston leading 34-33 with 9:35 left in the 2nd quarter, Ralph Sampson and Jerry Sichting became tangled and came up fighting. Both benches emptied during the wild melee. Dennis Johnson ended up with a bloody eye while Bill Walton tackled Sampson. Hakeem Olajuwon and Mitchell Wiggins also were in the middle of the fracas. Both Sampson and Sichting were ejected. Sampson had scored 12 points in just 14 minutes before being tossed. Immediately following the fight, the Rockets went on a 20-8 run to take a 54-41 lead. Jim Petersen and Johnson nearly had another fight shortly after but order was restored. Olajuwon would tie a Finals record with 8 blocks in the game. Ironically, it was Bill Walton in 1977 who also had 8 blocks. Boston would extend their lead to 21 after 3 periods. Kevin McHale scored 16 points in the 4th period but the closest Boston could come was 98-85.

Game #6 @Boston
Larry Bird delivered the knockout punch, figuratively in this game, early in Game 6. Bird would finish the 1st half with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. The Rockets missed their chance in the 1st quarter when they committed 11 turnovers. Seven of those turnovers came in the first 6 minutes as Boston jumped out to a 22-10 lead. Hakeem Olajuwon came up with 3 straight steals, 2 of whom he finished with dunks to cut the lead to 22-21. In the 2nd period, the Rockets could only make 6 of 23 shots. Boston would open up a 55-38 lead as they closed the half with a 24-10. Bird (13) and McHale (9) combined for 22 of the 24 points in the Celtic run. Ralph Sampson, booed with great vigor, scored only 2 points in the 1st half on 1-8 shooting. Boston outrebounded Houston 30-16 in the 1st half led by McHale’s 21 points and 9 rebounds. Larry Bird helped put the game away with a trio of 3-pointers in the 3rd period. Houston would get no closer than 14 points in the 2nd half as Boston led by as many as 30 (97-67) in the 4th quarter.
