Game #1 @Detroit
The Pistons, behind Isiah Thomas’ 16 1st half points, led by as many as 11 points in the opening half. L.A., already playing without the injured Byron Scott, was hurt further when Michael Cooper, A.C. Green, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Orlando Woolridge were all forced to the bench with foul trouble. The Pistons then went on a 11-3 run in the first 4 minutes of the 2nd half to take a 66-51 lead. They continued to pull away as they led by as many as 18 (97-79 with 6:00 left in the 4th) and L.A. was never able to get closer than 12 points in the 4th quarter. Detroit shot a sizzling 82% from the field in the final quarter.

Game #2 @Detroit
L.A. was struck with a deathblow in this game. Having already lost Byron Scott before the series started, they then lost Magic Johnson with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter when he injured his hamstring. Joe Dumars had been on fire with 24 points in the 1st half but L.A. still led by 6 at halftime. Michael Cooper forged that lead on two late 2nd quarter trifectas. In fact, the Lakers had led by 10 points on 2 occasions in the 1st quarter. The score was knotted at 75 when Magic left, but L.A. put on a 15-6 run to take a 9-point lead behind Michael Cooper and Tony Campbell. Detroit finally regrouped and outscored L.A. 21-5 to take a 102-95 lead as L.A. did not hit a shot until the 3:38 mark of the 4th period. L.A., though short-handed, would not give up and closed to within 106-104 late. Detroit was whistled for a 24-second violation with 8 seconds remaining. James Worthy was fouled with 2 seconds left but made only 1 of 2 shots to make it 106-105. Isiah Thomas hit 2 free throws to clinch it.

Game #3 @Los Angeles
Magic Johnson attempted to play with his bad hamstring, but had to leave after only 5 minutes with L.A. leading 11-8. The Lakers would build an 8-point bulge while Detroit would lead by as many as 5 in the 1st half. Despite playing without their starting backcourt, the Lakers built a 83-76 lead late in the 3rd period. Detroit stayed in it as Joe Dumars scored 21 of their 29 points in the period, including 17 straight at one point. The Microwave, Vinnie Johnson, heated up with 13 points in the 4th quarter as the Pistons took the lead. His jumper with 2:06 remaining gave Detroit a 109-104 lead. L.A. rallied and 2 free throws by David Rivers cut the lead to 113-110 with 13 seconds to play. Rivers had played a total of 8 minutes in the playoffs before this game. Dumars lost control of the ball and L.A. had a chance to tie the game. However, Dumars came right back and blocked Rivers’ shot attempt and then saved the ball from going out of bounds. Detroit would sink a free throw to seal the
win.

Game #4 @Los Angeles
In a game strangely similar to Game 4 of the 1983 Finals, an injury depleted Laker team down 0-3, built a big lead only to see it slip away in the 4th quarter. Detroit helped the cause in this game by missing 11 free throws in the 1st half. There was a double technical after Rick Mahorn and Michael Cooper exchanged unpleasantries in the 1st quarter. L.A.’s largest lead was 40-24 with 10:09 left in the half before Detroit closed the gap late in the half. The Lakers made 70% of the shots in the 1st quarter and James Worthy had 17 points in that quarter.
