Game #5 4/26/64 @Boston
The Warriors held the early lead despite Chamberlain not scoring for the first 6 minutes of the game. Boston pushed their lead to 9 (56-47) with an 11-6 run to start the 3rd quarter. Sam Jones fueled that run with 6 of the 11 points. They led by 11 times at serveral different junctions in the 3rd. S.F. rallied behind Chamberlain & took the lead, 78-77, with 10:29 left in the game on a Chamberlain fall-away jumper. Willie Naulls answered back with a 15-footer as Boston led for good. They built a 100-92 lead late, but S.F. wouldn’t go quietly. They rallied to within 101-99 with under 30 seconds to play & had a chance to tie. However, they could not pull down a Celtic miss & Bill Russell slammed one home to make it 103-99 with 0:15 left. Chamberlain pulled down 20+ boards for the 5th game in a row. Nate Thurmond averaged 13 rebounds per game; 2nd highest average for a rookie in the NBA Finals (behind only Russell in 1957).
