A rough game that left Russell with a strained muscle in his back & Bob Pettit with a bruised forehead. Pettit would win the game from the free throw line in the closing seconds.

In perhaps a first & last, Game 4 was part of a day/night doubleheader. The Harlem Globetrotters played before 8,000 at Kiel Center in one of their series of games against a team of college all-stars. The Celtics set a Finals record as they overcame a 15-point 1st quarter deficit to
win.

Game #7 4/13/57 @Boston
One of the wildest, best series finales in NBA history in which there were 38 lead changes & 28 ties. Boston’s backcourt of Bob Cousy & Bill Sharman scored only 7 points in the 1st half. Two offensive putbacks by Pettit gave St. Louis the lead after the 1st period. Boston took their biggest lead at 83-77 early in the 4th period, but the Hawks answered back with a 9-0 run to take an 86-83 lead. It would go back and forth until a Bill Russell hoop and a Cousy free throw gave Boston a 103-101 lead late. Russell blocked a Jack Coleman shot, but then fouled Pettit who hit 2 free throws to send the game into overtime. Heinsohn, who missed 7 straight free throws, hit a lay-up to give Boston a 113-111 lead with 15 seconds to play. Coleman than hit a 1-hander to tie the game at 113 and it went to a 2nd OT when Sharman missed with 0:04 left. St. Louis led 120-117 in the 2nd OT when Russell hit a lay-up & Heinsohn hit a long jumper to put the Celtics up by a point. Heinsohn then fouled out with 2:10 left and Slater Martin hit 1 of 2 shots to tie the game at 121. A Frank Ramsey hit a free throw to make it 122-121 Boston with 1:33 left. A long 1-hander by Ramsey made it 124-121 with 1:15 to go. Martin & Park each hit a free throw to close the gap to 124-123. St. Louis had a chance to take the lead but player/coach Alex Hannum was whistled for travelling. “Jungle” Jim Loscutoff hit a free throw to give the Celtics a 2-point lead with just 1 second left. Hannum then threw a length of the court pass off the backboard to Pettit, but Pettit couldn’t get the tying shot to fall. Russell broke his own rookie rebounding record in this game.
