Game #1 @Seattle
John Johnson put the defensive clamps on Bobby Dandridge as the Sonics rallied from way back to win. Fred Brown scored 16 of his 30 points in the final 10 minutes. Seattle trailed by 19 points at one point in the third quarter, 84-65. Seattle then scored 12 straight to cut the lead to 84-77. The it was Downtown Freddie Brown time as he hit a long jumper, a pull-up jumper, another jumper, converted a three-point play and a very long jumper from the right side to tie it at 88. He then came back and tied it at 91 with another three-point play with 5:07 to play. After a Grevey miss, Dennis Johnson found Brown on the break to give the Sonics a 93-91 lead. Grevey's own three-point play gave the Bullets a 98-95 lead with 2:30 to play. A D.J. jumper made it 98-97. Charles Johnson answered to make it 100-97. John Johnson came back to cut it to 100-99. C.J. answered one more time but Brown was still on fire with a 24 footer to make it 102-101 Washington. Larry Wright then fouled D.J. who converted both free throws. Wright misfired with 59 seconds left but Brown missed with 36 seconds left as the shot clock wound down. However, Paul Silas grabbed the offensive board and fed Brown for another jumper that made it 105-102 with 14 seconds left.

Game #2 @Washington
The Bullets nearly led another huge lead slip away but managed to right themselves in game two. Washington led by 16 but Seattle cut the margin all the way down to two points before Elvin Hayes keyed a late Washington run. The Bullets were bolstered by a rare scoring outburst from point guard Tom Henderson. The Bullets ran to a 29-16 lead after one as Seattle made only six of 23 shot attempts, but Seattle cut it to 56-52 at the half as Paul Silas shut down Elvin Hayes. Hayes rallied with 14 points in the third quarter and Tom Henderson put the shackles on Fred Brown after his explosive game one. Dandridge bounced back with 34 points while Hayes had 20.

Game #3 @Washington
Seattle got great defense and a balanced scoring attack to down the Bullets. Washington guards made only nine of 45 shots while Dennis Johnson had seven blocked shots. Hayes and Dandridge combined for 50 of Washington's 92 points. Seattle had six players in double figures and had Paul Silas and Fred Brown combine for 22 off the bench. Seattle led 88-79 with four minutes left before Washington started mounting a comeback. They came closer and closer and cut it to 93-90 when Tom Henderson fed Wes Unseld for a bucket underneath with 12 seconds to play. Henderson then stole Dennis Johnson's pass and laid it in to make it a one point game with three seconds left. Then came some controversy; referee Earl Strom ruled that Paul Silas had stepped over the line when inbounding the ball and gave possession to Seattle. The Sonics along with CBS announcer Brent Musberger claimed that Silas had not stepped over the line. Dandridge missed a jumper from the corner and Hayes' tip-in wouldn't go and Silas claimed the board and game.

Game #4 @Seattle
In front of the largest crowd in NBA history, the Bullets prevailed in overtime after rallying late in regulation. Seattle led 85-70 late in the third quarter and 87-78 entering the fourth quarter but the Bullets came back led by Charles Johnson. The Bullets battled back and tied the game at 97 as Marvin Webster, Jack Sikma and John Johnson all picked up their fifth fouls in the fourth. Seattle led 104-103 when Fred Brown was called for an offensive foul. A Bobby Dandridge three-point play gave the Bullets a 106-104 lead with 20 seconds to play. Brown came back and knocked down a 15-footer to send it to overtime. Charles Johnson scored eight points in the OT and a clutch defensive board by Wes Unseld helped seal the win when Tom Henderson made two free throws. The Sonics lost a golden opportunity to go up 3-1 in the series.

Game #5 @Seattle
The Sonics seized a 3-2 lead in the series behind the play of Downtown Fred Brown who scored 26 points in 26 minutes and hit 11 of his first 15 shots. Seattle led 52-41 at the half and Washington could not come all the way back in the third quarter. Seattle still led by 11 at 78-67 before Washington mounted a move. Seattle went over the foul limit with 9:20 left in the game and Washington climbed all the way back within one point at 84-83 at the 4:20 mark. It was 88-86 when Marvin Webster jammed an offensive rebound through to make it 90-86. Seattle held them off behind 8-8 free throw shooting down the stretch by Gus Williams, Jack Sikma and Paul Silas. The Bullets hurt themselves by making less than 60% of their free throws. Elvin Hayes only scored five points in the second half and two of those were on a meaningless hoop at the buzzer.

Game #6 @Washington
The Bullets pulled even in the series by scoring one of the most lopsided wins in NBA Finals history to date as Seattle scored the fewest points in a Finals game since 1955. Seattle actually led by two after the first period but were outscored 98-61 the rest of the way. Kevin Grevey left with an injury early after only six minutes of action with Washington ahead 34-31, Bobby Dandridge moved to guard and ignited a rally that broke the game open when he scored eight points in 59 seconds. Seattle made only 20.8% of its shots in the pivotal second quarter. Greg Ballard replaced Dandridge at small forward and finished with 12 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Ballard had played only 21 minutes all series before this game and they got another big game from Charles Johnson. Johnson was signed on January 24 - after he had been waived by Golden State - when the Bullets were down to seven healthy players.

Game #7 @Seattle
Washington, led by an uncharacteristic trio, built a lead through three periods and held off the Sonics to win the title. Wes Unseld scored a series high 15 points with Charles Johnson getting his series high 19 and Mitch Kupchak chipped in with 13 as well. Dennis Johnson suffered a nightmare as he went 0-14 from the field which wasted a series high 27 points by Marvin "The Human Eraser" Webster and 21 each from Fred Brown and Jack Sikma. The Bullets were up by 10 points with eight minutes to play but Seattle give up the ghost yet. They cut it to 98-94 when Washington missed a shot. Three Sonics went after the ball but it bounced to Mitch Kupchak under the hoop and he laid it in as he was fouled. He converted the free throw to make it 101-94. Still Seattle wouldn't go away. Unseld missed two free throws and a Paul Silas offensive stickback made it 101-99 with 18 seconds to play. They fouled Unseld again with 12 seconds left and Unseld missed the first again. However, he made the next two and sealed it for the Bullets.
