Game #1 @Los Angeles
The Pistons jumped on the Lakers and never let them recover as they stunned L.A. at the Forum. Detroit scored the game’s first 8 points before the fans could get settled in their seats. L.A. came back to take the lead but back-to-back jumpers by Vinnie Johnson gave Detroit a 26-23 advantage early in the 2nd. The game would never be so much as tied again. The margin was 11 in the dying seconds of the 1st half when Detroit, for all intents and purposes, put the game away. First, Bill Laimbeer hit an open 3 with 0:03 on the clock and then Isiah Thomas stole the ball and hit a 3 at the buzzer to push the lead to 17. Adrian Dantley would take it from there as he scored 22 points in the 2nd half including 12 straight Piston points in the 4th quarter.

Game #2 @Los Angeles
Los Angeles overcame a flu-ridden Magic Johnson to even the series. The Lakers used a balanced attack to grab the lead and held onto the lead until the 4th quarter. With the score 80-68, Detroit scored 12 unanswered points to tie the game with 8:17 left to play. L.A. responded behind James Worthy to go back out in front by a 93-86 count. Dennis Rodman then scored back-to-back hoops to cut the lead to 93-90 with 2:59 left in the game. But the Lakers closed the door with a 10-2 run led by A.C. Green’s 4 points that left them leading 103-92 late.

Game #3 @Detroit
L.A. seized the lead in the series behind a balanced attack from their starters. However, their bench continued to struggle from the field. A.C. Green held Adrian Dantley to 2 1st half points and Rick Mahorn continued to be plagued by a back injury. The Lakers then broke it open when James Worthy scored the first 8 points of the 3rd quarter to give L.A. a 55-46 lead. L.A. would shoot 64% in the period while the Pistons only shot 35% as L.A. opened up a 14-point lead. Detroit could get no closer than 9 points in the 4th quarter. Apparently having seen enough, Pistons coach Chuck Daly would get tossed from the game in the 4th period.

Game #4 @Detroit
L.A. used a 10-0 run midway through the 1st period to take a 22-21 lead but Detroit would retake the lead behind Isiah Thomas’ 6 assists in the period. L.A. would be hampered in the 2nd period when James Worthy and Byron Scott both had to leave the game with their 3rd person fouls. Michael Cooper continued to be mired in a horrid shooting slump and L.A. had nobody to take up the slack. Dennis Rodman covered Magic Johnson during a key stretch of the game and helped Detroit surge to the lead. Detroit opened up a 48-37 lead in the 2nd period when James Edwards and Vinnie Johnson combined to score 14 of 16 points during the Detroit run. Detroit was still leading 68-61 when Magic had to leave with foul trouble with 7:03 left in the period. Detroit then went on a 15-4 run to open the lead up to 18 points. All that was left was a near fight between Isiah and Magic after Magic elbowed Isiah as Isiah drove down the lane.

Game #5
@Detroit
L.A. looked to have regained their form as they scored the game’s first 12 points on route to a 15-2 lead. In their last game ever at the Silverdome, the Pistons would not fold. Led in the 1st half by Adrian Dantley’s 19 points and Vinnie Johnson’s 12, Detroit would come back to lead by 9 at the break. The game was tied at 37 when Detroit went on a 13-2 run to seize command. L.A. would cut the lead to 2 twice in the 3rd period but could not get things squared. The Pistons used their advantage on the boards in the 4th to maintain their lead. Detroit came up with 10 offensive rebounds in the 4th while L.A. had just 2.

Game #6 @Los Angeles
The Lakers used the hot hands of James Worthy and Byron Scott to forge a lead in the 2nd quarter. They were still leading 56-48 in the 3rd period when Isiah Thomas began one of the best quarters in Finals history. Thomas would go 11-13 from the field in 3rd quarter and score 25 points in the period. At one point, he scored 14 straight Piston points. However, with 4 minutes left in the 3rd, Thomas landed on Michael Cooper’s foot and severely sprained his ankle. He would return but it would have consequences. Still, with 1 minute remaining it looked like Detroit might win their 1st NBA championship as they led 102-99. Scott knocked down a 14-footer to cut the lead to 1 with 52 seconds left. Thomas then missed an 18-foot jumper and L.A. claimed the rebound. On the ensuing possession, Bill Laimbeer fouled Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on a skyhook attempt. The goggled one then made both shots to give the Lakers a 103-102 lead with 14 ticks left. Joe Dumars then missed a 5-footer in traffic and Scott pulled down the rebounded and was fouled with 0:02 left. He missed both shots but Detroit could not get a shot off.

Game #7 @Los Angeles
The Pistons controlled the game in the 1st half and led by 5 after Isiah Thomas hit 2 jumpers in the last 27 seconds of the half. James Worthy and Adrian Datley both scored 11 points in the 1st quarter. Thomas, playing on a very bum wheel, scored 10 points in the 1st half but could play little after halftime. In the 2nd half, Michael Cooper finally broke out of his clump with some big shots as L.A. built a lead. The Pistons only made 1 field goal in the first 6:05 of the 3rd stanza. Worthy scored 7 straight to give L.A. a 56-54 lead. He would score 11 and Byron Scott would score 14 in the 3rd. The Lakers were leading 90-75 in the 4th when Chuck Daly went with a pressing line-up of Vinnie Johnson, John Salley, Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman and Bill Laimbeer. The Pistons then mounted a comeback as they cut the lead to 98-92 with 3:52 left to play after a 13-4 run. They continued to claw back and cut it to 102-100 on a Dumars hoop with 1:17 remaining. Magic made 1 of 2 free throws but an ill-advised Rodman jumper got L.A. the ball right back and Scott nailed 2 free throws to make it 105-100 with less than 40 seconds remaining. Dumars again came through and cut it back to 3. Worthy made 1 of 2 at the line and Laimbeer nailed a 3 to cut the lead to 106-105 with 6 seconds left. A.C. Green got free for a lay-up on the ensuing in-bounds play and, when Thomas couldn’t get a final shot off, the Lakers had repeated.
