Game #1 @Boston
The Rockets led Boston by 14 in the first quarter but Boston would rally back. The Celtics battled back using second chance points off the board. Boston would outscore Houston 33-18 off the offensive glass. Boston used Robert Parish, Kevin McHale and Rick Robey on Moses Malone to keep him in check. Houston was still clinging to a 91-88 lead with 5:36 to play but could not hold back the tide. On hoops by Parish, Larry Bird, M.L. Carr and another Parish bucket, Boston took a 96-91 lead at the three-minute mark. Houston came back behind two Tom Henderson shots to pull within 96-95 with 1:29 to play. However, Boston would hold possession for the next 70 seconds. They came up with six consecutive offensive rebounds (the first two by Chris Ford and then four by Bird) before Bird converted the 6th into a bucket with 19 seconds left. Del Harris called timeout and inserted Rudy Tomjanovich into the line-up for the first time. Rudy T missed the three-point attempt and Robert Reid missed the follow. Carr grabbed the rebound to save the game.

Game #2 @Boston
After surviving a Boston eight-point lead, Houston again took the lead late in the game. This time, however, they would make the clutch plays down the stretch. Moses Malone scored nine of Houston's first 12 points but still did not make the impact he had in prior rounds. Boston was leading 88-87 at the 2:10 mark when Bill Willoughby connected on a 19-foot baseline jumper off a pass from Allen Leavell to give the Rockets the lead. Malone preserved the lead when he blocked a Larry Bird shot with 35 seconds to play. Off the ensuing break, Leavell hit a fallaway to make it 91-88. Nate Archibald hit two free throws to make it 91-90 with 18 seconds left. Mike Dunleavy made only one of two free throws and Boston got the ball back down by two with 11 seconds left. Archibald missed a 17 footer with three seconds left that would have tied it.

Game #3 @Houston
Boston put the big hurt on Houston as the Rockets barely avoided setting a 24-shot clock era low for points in the NBA Finals. A Major Jones rebound hoop with 10 seconds left. Houston made only three of 17 shots in the second quarter to dig their own grave. They then threw some dirt on themselves by committing 22 turnovers that led to 29 Boston points. Calvin Murphy's streak of 49 consecutive made free throws in the playoffs came to an end. He was seven short of Bill Sharman's record of 56. Robert Parish had to leave the game after colliding with Moses Malone. His injury required five stitches. Rick Robey matched up against Malone and did an excellent job on Malone, holding him to only 13 shot attempts.

Game #4 @Houston
Houston tied the series with Del Harris using only six players in the game. Mike Dunleavy led the way with 13 points in the third quarter. Houston took their biggest lead of the game, 88-76, when Moses Malone hit two free throws with 6:27 left in the game. The Rockets would score only three more points the rest of the way. Boston cut the lead the lead to 88-80 with 5:18 but then shot themselves in the foot. The Celtics would make only four of eight free throws when they had a chance to tie the game. Robert Reid hit a jumper with 3:52 left to make it 90-84. Larry Bird turned the ball over with 2:06 left and then fouled Reid who hit one of two to make it 91-84. Houston made only six of 18 shots in the fourth but it was just enough to hold on. Calvin Murphy didn't get off the bench in this game despite having the hot shooting hand in the playoffs.

Game #6 @Houston
Houston got off to a hot start but was not able to hold off Boston. Larry Bird finally shook free from Robert Reid's defense to get hot as he scored 16 points in the second half. Boston was leading 84-67 with 10:10 left when Houston summoned one last run. Houston went on a 16-2 run to cut it to 86-83 with 4:57 left. Bird then provided knockout punch. He hit a 15-footer off a feed from Cedric Maxwell, then took a pass from Nate Archibald and hit an 18-footer and then drained three-pointer off a Chris Ford pass. This was the first time in the series that Boston made 50% of its shots.
