NBA All Star Game

LONG DISTANCE SHOOTOUT

In 1986 NBA added another element to the party. The last enlargement has been in 1984, and then Dallas had the honour of being the place where this contest began.

The rules are very easy. Players have to shot 25 balls, 5 in each position. The last ball of each position has three colors (red, blue and white), it costs 2 points. The rest of the balls are brown, their value are only one point. 8 players participate in 3 rounds, losing the players with the less puntuation in each round.

At the moment, these are the 16 editions:

1986
The first proof was good. Bird's participation put a high level, Larry was the first winner with a great final.

Dale Ellis could win. He taked advantage of Larry Bird's absence, and won his first contest with a regular series. NBA invited to Rimas Kurtinaitis, probably the best european shooter in the 80's. He finished the last, maybe too much distance for him.

Hornacek won again in the (probably) worst contest in the history. The final was ugly, winning Hornacek with only 13 points.
This edition only had two rounds, with three players in the final.
The German Dirk Nowitzki is the tallest player (7 feet) in this kind of contest.

Players were selected for two reasons, the best averages and 3 pointers made. Ray Allen was the best, while Peja Stojakovic almost won two contests in a day (minutes before he won the 2Ball with Ruthie Bolton Holifield), and Dirk Nowitzki repeated final. Allen had only 9 points with 10 balls left, but in that moment he showed why he is one of the top shooters in the NBA, scoring 9 consecutive shots (10 points) that gave him the victory.

The surprises were paul Pierce and Steve Smith, with only 8 points in the first round.

2003
Repeating the 2002 contest, Peja Stojakovic won again in the tiebreaker against Wesley Person, in a exciting contest with very high scores.

In the first round, were eliminated Pat Garrity, David Wesley and Antoine Walker, who had a lot of troubles to shoot all the balls because of his slow pace. He almost made a negative record, but he got 5 of 7 points in the last seconds.
Wesley Person didn't shoot well, but he made the minimum (14 points) to enter in the final round. More efective were Stojakovic and Brent Barry, both with 19 points.

In the final, Person began slow but finished on fire with 20 points. Stojakovic's answer was great, reaching the 20 points barrier, but he missed his last 2 shots. Brent Barry only made 17 points, and he'll have to wait until another edition to become the first player to win the slam dunk and the shootout contest.
This edition, the tie-break had a complete minute instead of 30 seconds. Stojakovic shot first, but his serie was a chaos (13 points). He shot while a buzzer started to work, some balls almost hit him on the face ... so the judges decided to cancel this serie.
Person was the first to shoot now, and he only made 16 points. Theoretically, Peja had to be very tired at this moment of the contest, but he keeped surprising people scoring 22 points (Maximum score in a final tied with Craig Hodges) in order to get his second contest.
